Walking a dog in North Vancouver

North Vancouver is where the city runs into the mountains, and dogs here get a different life for it. The walks are wetter, muddier and more interesting than anything downtown, and the difference between a June walk and a November walk is enormous.

Down in Lower Lonsdale the Shipyards and the waterfront give you flat, paved walking with a view across to downtown, which is the sensible option for older dogs and for days when the trails are a swamp. Mosquito Creek and the greenway alongside it are the everyday option a little further up. Beyond that, Lynn Canyon Park and the trails behind it are proper forest walking, with roots, creeks, steps and mud for most of the year.

The practical consequence is towels. From October to April a North Vancouver dog comes home wet, and a caregiver who has not thought about that tracks the North Shore through your hallway. We plan for it: towel by the door, paws done properly, and a route chosen for what the ground is actually like that week rather than what it was like in August.

What we do in North Vancouver

Dog walking. One-on-one, on-leash. Waterfront and greenway on wet weeks, trails when the ground allows and the dog enjoys it.
In-home pet sitting. An hour, a day, overnight, or an extended stay in your own home.
Drop-in visits. A feed, a medication, a garden check, a short walk, and a proper look at how your pet is doing.
1-on-1 daycare. Daycare without the kennel, in your pet's own home.
Cat care. Feeding, litter, medication, play, and time actually spent with them.
Home care on longer stays. Mail and parcels, plants, bins, bedding and towels.

Mud, stairs and the North Shore winter

Half the year on the North Shore is wet. That is not a complaint, it is a planning input. A dog who loves Lynn Canyon in July may hate it in February, and pushing them through it because it is on the schedule is how you end up with a dog who does not want to go out at all.

We adjust. Shorter and flatter when the weather is bad, longer and rougher when it is good, and we tell you what we actually did rather than sending the same message every day. You get photos and videos so you can see the walk your dog got, not the walk we planned.

The other North Vancouver specific: houses here often have steps, decks, side gates and a garden that a determined dog can get out of. We go through all of it at the free meet and greet, along with keys, alarm codes and which door we use.

Questions from North Vancouver

Do you take dogs on the trails?

When it suits the dog and the ground allows it. Lynn Canyon and the trails behind it are wonderful in summer and hard work in February. For older dogs, or in a wet week, we use the Shipyards waterfront and the Mosquito Creek greenway instead.

Is there a travel charge for North Vancouver?

No. North Vancouver is covered at our normal rates. We do ask for a bit more notice than a downtown booking, because visits here take longer to reach and we would rather plan them properly.

My dog comes home filthy. Is that a problem?

No, it is the normal state of a North Shore dog for half the year. We towel paws and legs properly at the door and leave your hallway the way we found it.

Do you cover Deep Cove and the upper neighbourhoods?

Ask. We cover a good deal of North Vancouver, but it depends on the week and who is free. We would rather tell you no early than take a booking we cannot serve properly.
