Walking a dog in Coal Harbour
Coal Harbour is a small neighbourhood with a lot of dogs in it. Almost every residence is a tower, which means a lift, a lobby, a concierge desk, and a fob for at least one of them. It also means your dog is never more than a few minutes from open water.
The seawall runs the length of the neighbourhood, from the convention centre round to Stanley Park, and it is the spine of most of our walks here. Devonian Harbour Park, at the Stanley Park end, has a fenced off-leash dog area, which makes it the usual destination when a dog needs to actually run rather than just walk. Harbour Green Park gives you grass and a water view without crossing a single road.
The practical challenge in Coal Harbour is not distance, it is access and timing. Sunny weekends turn the seawall into a slow-moving crowd of cyclists, tourists and scooters, which is not where you want a reactive dog. We walk inland or go early instead. In winter the wind comes straight off the harbour and short-coated dogs get cold quickly, so the route changes again.
What we do in Coal Harbour
The same care as everywhere else, run around a tower schedule.
- Dog walking. One-on-one, on-leash, on the seawall or inland depending on the weather and your dog. Never a van full of other dogs.
- In-home pet sitting. From an hour to overnight and extended stays, in your own suite, with your dog or cat on their normal routine.
- Drop-in visits. A quick check, a feed, a litter box, a medication, a short walk. Useful if you are working long days downtown.
- 1-on-1 daycare. Daycare without the kennel, in your pet's own home.
- Hotel pet sitting. Coal Harbour has a lot of visiting pet parents. If you are staying nearby, we come to you.
- Home care on longer stays. Mail and packages from the concierge, plants, bins, bedding and towels.
Buildings, fobs and concierges
Most Coal Harbour bookings involve at least one of these: a visitor fob, a concierge who needs your name on a list, an elevator that only reaches your floor with a key, or a parkade entrance that is easier to find with instructions than without.
We sort all of that out at the free meet and greet, before your first booking, not on the morning you fly out. If your building requires a caregiver to be registered with the concierge, tell us and we will get it done. If your strata has rules about pets in the lobby or the passenger lift, we follow them.
The other thing worth saying: the person you meet is the person who comes. Every caregiver meets you and your pet before they ever work with them, which matters more in a building where a stranger with a fob is a genuine concern.
Questions from Coal Harbour
Do you walk dogs on the Coal Harbour seawall?
Yes, and it is the default route for most Coal Harbour dogs. On busy sunny weekends we walk inland or go early instead, because a crowded seawall is not a good place for a nervous or reactive dog.
Is there anywhere off-leash nearby?
Devonian Harbour Park, at the Stanley Park end of Coal Harbour, has a fenced off-leash dog area. Off-leash areas and their hours change from time to time, so we check the current City of Vancouver listing rather than going from memory.
Can you deal with my building concierge and fobs?
Yes. Most of our Coal Harbour clients live in towers. We go through fobs, codes, concierge instructions, lift access and parkade entry at the free meet and greet, and we get registered with your concierge if your building requires it.
How many pets can one caregiver look after?
Two. That is what our insurance allows and what proper one-on-one attention actually requires.
Meet us before you book. It is free.
Tell us about your pet, your building and your dates. We will set up a free meet and greet in your home with the person who would be caring for them.
