Walking a dog in Kitsilano

Kitsilano is the opposite of downtown in almost every way that matters to a dog. More houses, more back gardens, more character walk-ups, fewer lifts and fobs. Dogs here tend to be bigger, the walks tend to be longer, and there is grass at the end of most streets.

Kits Beach is the obvious draw, and the path along the water carries you east past Hadden Park and Vanier Park toward the museum and the bridges. Going the other way gets you to Jericho Beach and a much longer walk. Inland, Tatlow Park and the quiet residential blocks between 3rd and 8th are where we take dogs who would rather not deal with a crowd.

The seasonal swing here is bigger than downtown. In July the beach path is packed from ten in the morning, and volleyball, cyclists and loose frisbees are all in play. In February the same route is empty, windy and often wet. The walk we plan in summer is not the walk we do in winter, and we say so at the meet and greet rather than pretending one route fits the year.

Dog walking. One-on-one, on-leash, along the water or through the quiet residential blocks depending on the season and the dog.
In-home pet sitting. An hour, a day, overnight, or an extended stay in your own house or suite.
Drop-in visits. A midday break, a feed, a medication, a garden check.
1-on-1 daycare. Daycare without the kennel, in your pet's own home.
Cat care. Feeding, litter, medication, play, and a proper look at how they are doing.
Home care on longer stays. Mail and parcels, plants and garden watering, bins out on the right day, bedding and towels.

Houses, gardens and back doors

A house is a different job from a suite. There are usually more doors, a garden that needs watering in July, a gate that has to be latched properly, and bins that go out on a specific morning. There is also more for a dog to get into while you are away.

We go through all of it at the free meet and greet: which door we use, where the spare key lives, which gate the dog can open if it is not latched, when the bins go out, what gets watered and how often. On longer stays we bring the mail in and leave the place at least as tidy as we found it.

One caregiver stays with your booking from start to finish, and you meet them before anything goes ahead. In a neighbourhood where we are letting ourselves into a house rather than a monitored lobby, that matters more, not less.

Do you walk dogs at Kits Beach?

Yes, though not always. In summer the beach path is crowded from mid-morning, so for dogs who find that stressful we use Tatlow Park and the quieter residential blocks instead, or go early.

Can you water the garden and put the bins out?

Yes, on longer stays that is part of it. Mail and parcels, plants and garden watering, bins out on the right morning, bedding and towels, and the place left tidy.

I have a house, not a condo. Any difference?

Only in the practical detail: more doors, a garden, a gate, and bins. We go through all of it at the free meet and greet so nothing is guesswork on day one.
